I love Christmas. I love the smell of fir trees and hot apple cider. I love the way our wood burning fireplace warms my skin. I love watching a multitude of Christmas movies and finding that while they're all different, they all inevitably point to one thing: the reason for the season. Every movie highlights a different reason, of course. Sometimes they point to the value of family and sometimes to the importance of giving. One highlights the need to come together in love, and another tells us we're celebrating the birth of Jesus. This year more than ever before, I feel myself drawing near to the Lord in order to celebrate His grace and incredible redeeming love.
Christmas isn't just about celebrating the birth of a baby. It's about celebrating the fact that God, who is righteous and holy and perfect, chose to give himself on our behalf. He drew near to us, walking through life as a man so that He could provide a way for us to draw near to Him. The God that I serve is not distant. He came to earth, lived among men without sin and sacrificed Himself so that we could know Him. When Jesus Christ was born, the creator of the universe became Emmanuel - God with us.
