Engaged! Jake & Julie : Des Moines, IA

I LOVE to travel, and I enthusiastically embrace any opportunity I have to explore a new city. Naturally, I leaped at the chance to photograph Jake and Julie’s engagement session in Des Moines, Iowa. Little did I know, this Southern girl was headed for sub-freezing temperatures, snow drifts, and frozen rivers. Did you catch that? Frozen. Rivers. How on earth does a river freeze? It’s moving water. It makes me shiver just thinking about it! Luckily, Jake and Julie are Iowa natives and were not the least bit discouraged by the cold and windy weather.

We began our session at the Des Moines botanical center, where the indoor climate was humid and 80 degrees. It made the frozen midwest feel a little bit like home.

It was so warm in the botanical center that Jake and Julie were willing to wander through the streets of downtown Des Moines without their coats on. That, folks, is what I call courage!

Jake and Julie, thank you SO MUCH for inviting me to stay in your home, for introducing me to some incredible food, and for allowing me to snuggle with and love on your darling pups. I had a wonderful weekend, and it’s all thanks to you two. Oh, and Major thanks you for the homemade dog treats you sent home for him! He gobbled them up and wondered why I didn’t have any more. I guess I need to get that recipe from you after all!

Engaged! Sina & Nadia : Piedmont Park Engagement

Like many great love stories, Sina and Nadia began their relationship as friends. Sina will tell you that he wanted to be with Nadia from the moment that he met her. Nadia cherished the closeness that she and Sina built as friends, and she was afraid that being romantic could hurt the strong relationship they shared. Little did she know that when she said yes to their first date, she was opening her heart to the person who would become her confidant, partner, rock, and best friend. These two care very much for each other, and they love to relax and laugh together. They are exactly the kind of clients that I love to celebrate – joyful, affectionate, and authentic. I hope these bring a smile to your face.

I showed up an hour early to our shoot so that I could scope out a few places around Piedmont Park that we’re gray and foggy. This tree was the only one blooming in the whole park, as far as I could see. Trust me, I looked!

Love Letter Sessions : Sina & Nadia

If you had told my parents when I was young that I would grow up to be a photographer, they probably would have responded with a quizzical expression. If you know me personally or if you’ve followed my blog for a while, then the reason will not surprise you. While I love creating beautiful photographs, photography is not my first love. I did not grow up with a camera in hand. I spent my time painting elaborate pictures with words. I am a passionate and enthusiastic storyteller, and I spent my adolescence filling spiral notebooks with poems, short stories, and pieces of novels that I swore I’d one day be famous for. While I never developed the patience required to complete a novel, I did manage to create and share a vast multitude of fictional tales with my family, friends, and teachers. When I did not have a pen in my hand, I had my nose in a book. Reading provides me with the opportunity to connect with fascinating characters and explore complex new places in my imagination. I often find myself becoming so emotionally invested in these fictional worlds that I feel a sense of loss when the story ends.

This is one of the reasons why I love being a wedding photographer. I get so excited when I have the opportunity to meet a new couple and become immersed in their love story. The adventures and anecdotes that they share inspire the work that I create, and I love being able to document and preserve precious memories for them. As I considered how I want to build and refine my brand this year, I continually returned to a simple question. How can I capture and share my client’s stories in a way that has meaningful and lasting impact? Love letter sessions are my answer to this question.

Technology provides us with a wide range of methods for connecting and communicating with each other. We text, chat, tweet, and Facebook message each other constantly, yet we do not often take the time to speak meaningfully to each other. Our words can have a profoundly positive impact in the lives of others if we are purposeful about sharing them. So as a way to preserve my couple’s stories and encourage them to connect with each other, I am offering a new type of session. The Love Letter Session.

I met Sina and Nadia on Sunday afternoon for their session, and I could not have chosen a more perfect couple to begin this project with. They are joyful, affectionate, and adventurous, and they did not worry at all when it began to pour. They just laughed, joined hands, and asked me to take their picture in the rain. I am so thankful to them for being warm, open, and authentic with their love letters and for providing me with a beautiful example to share with all of you.

Engaged! James & Sarah : Piedmont Park

The transition from high school life to college life is often challenging. It’s a time when you decide who, what, and where you want to be and how you’re going to get there. While many students have the best intentions of staying connected with the people they leave behind, more often than not old relationships suffer and fall apart as a result of the distance and stress. This could easily have been James and Sarah’s story, but they stuck it out when things got hard, and now, 8 years later, they are more in love than they’ve ever been and completely excited about building their life together as a married couple. They’ll tell you that their journey has certainly been challenging, but that staying together was well worth the battles that they faced. I can’t wait to celebrate their wedding in Chattanooga!

Engaged! Kevin & Suzanne

I’d never had a conversation with her, but as I watched her audition from the doorway of the church I realized two things: She sang beautifully, and she had caught the eye of my ex boyfriend. In my fifteen year old mind, she had done the unforgivable and I was prepared to go to war. Start a cat fight. Mean girl it up. She didn’t even understand the force of hormone induced crazy that was about to come her way. I put on my best Regina George face and stomped down the aisle to say hello. And then, somehow, the impossible happened. She smiled at me, struck up a conversation, and I was immediately charmed. You see, Suzanne is warm, friendly, honest, open and seriously classy, and it wasn’t long before she became one of my absolute best friends. Boys and crushes aside, we shared the most important thing that two friends can: the passionate pursuit of faith.

Over the last ten years.. wait, ten? Excuse me, ten years? Has it REALLY been that long? We’re getting old, sister! Over the last ten years we have shared laughter and tears, late nights and early mornings, family drama, friend drama and at times needless drama. We’ve leaned on each other through heartbreak, encouraged each other through tough times, and easily shared a hundred nerdy inside jokes that no one else could hope to understand. If you knew us both, you would be struck by how different we are. At times, it takes us by surprise as well. But we bring balance into each others lives, and we make each other better. Just in case I haven’t come across clearly enough, let me spell it out for you: I love this girl! And she has finally found the person that she will serve with, celebrate and share a lifetime of love with.

Suzanne and Kevin, I know that the two of you had kind of a rough start, but I am so, SO excited that you stuck it out and are going to build a life together. Suzanne, I’ve never seen you so happy, and Kevin I have to love you already because you bring so much joy into my friend’s life. I cannot wait to document your wedding and celebrate with you as you share your vows next April.

Engaged! David & Elise : Wolf Mountain Winery

When I met Heather at Zach and Tessa’s wedding, I crossed my fingers and quietly hoped that I would be invited into her life again when she got engaged. Now, two years later, I’m anxiously and excitedly awaiting the day in October that I will get to see her family again and document the beginning of her married life with Brad. These two are incredibly genuine, and their love for each other is demonstrated in everything that they do. They are made for each other, they’re adorable together, and if their wedding is even half as much fun as their engagement session, it’s going to be a ball. I hope you enjoy these as much as I do!

Engaged! Kelly & Laura : Eagles Landing Country Club

It was a whim, really. Kelly was freshly transplanted from Texas and attending a welcome party for his pilot class at Delta. It didn’t take him long to realize that the party was going to be a room full of men shaking hands and making small talk, so he and his friend went searching for something a little more fun. That’s when they stumbled upon Hand in Hand in the Virginia Highlands. Kelly had no way of knowing that by walking into that bar, he was on his way to meeting the girl he would spend the rest of his life with. Laura was hanging out with a group of her girlfriends, and she happened to run into Kelly at the sweet tea table. Their romance started with a simple question- “Why on earth are they serving sweet tea at a bar?” And the rest, as they say, is history!

I am so honored that Kelly and Laura have invited me to be part of their wedding. Laura is one of my sorority sisters, and she is such a classy, beautiful young woman. She has met her match with Kelly, who is friendly and charming, and seems that he could carry on a conversation with anyone. They’re the type of couple that can make you feel like you’re old friends in minutes, and I’m so excited to celebrate their marriage in November! They chose Eagles Landing Country Club as the location for their engagement pictures because Kelly is a member there and they love to golf together. I think these turned out so cute!

Engaged! John & Sophie : Grant Park

Sophie and John are getting married next spring, and I am so excited to be part of their wedding! They are so friendly and laid back, and they are absolutely best friends. One characteristic that all of my clients have in common is the fact that they are more excited about being married than getting married, and these two definitely fit that description. They are so ready to begin their married lives together, and I can’t wait to document it for them!

Engaged! Brandon & Taylor : Charleston Air Force Base

Are you ready for an adventure? Because this session will take you on one! This session represents a few exciting firsts for me. It was my first time shooting in Charleston, my first time photographing a pilot, and my first time exploring an AIR FORCE JET! And it was amazing! When I asked Taylor where she wanted to have her engagement session, she immediately chose the Air Force Base in Charleston. Her fiance Brandon is a pilot, so it was the perfect setting their photos. I love when couples choose a location that really reflects who they are, what they do, and what they love. Taylor wanted to make sure they had a diverse mix of photos to share with friends and family, so we began their session on Thursday in the historic district. I am officially in love with this beautiful city!

We grabbed dinner at Poogan’s Porch (which was DELICIOUS!) and then headed to bed because we had to be at the base by 8am the next morning. Getting up early and braving the heat were SO worth it, because the flight line made for a wonderfully different and unique backdrop!

Brandon and Taylor, thank you so much for inviting me to Charleston to document this special time in your lives! I can’t wait for your wedding in September!
